You are cordially invited to the launch of two freshly released books by the photographer Jimmy DeSana, Salvation and Quotations from Jimmy DeSana, on Saturday, 6 July, 5 pm, at b_books. With Isaac Alpert (PPOW Gallery) and Andrew Suggs among others.
The event will take place the day after the opening of the duo exhibition Ruins of Rooms with works by Jimmy DeSana (1949–1990, US) and Paul P. (b. 1977, CA) at KW, Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin. The show brings the two artists into dialogue for the first time, looking at the notion of their portraiture.
Salvation is a previously-unpublished artist book that DeSana conceptualized shortly before his death in 1990. The publication contains 44 of the artist’s late photographic abstractions that quietly and poetically meditate on loss, death and nothingness. Long-considered to be DeSana’s last major work and only now available for the first time, the book provides a nuanced and sophisticated counterpoint to the prevailing work around HIV/AIDS at the time. Salvation is 48 pages, measures 21,5 x 26,5 cm and retails for 20 Euro.
Quotations from Jimmy DeSana is a small book of poems and images created by the artist to accompany his exhibition at Pat Hearn Gallery in 1988. Produced here as a facsimile edition, the book includes 18 poems touching on loss and the unknown – bookended by quotes from St. Augustine, Nietzsche and Picasso – as well as three photographs from the exhibition they accompanied. Quotations from Jimmy DeSana is 12 pages, measures 9,5 x 13,3 cm and retails for 10 Euro.

Die Veranstaltung findet am Tag nach der Eröffnung der Duo-Ausstellung Ruins of Rooms mit Werken von Jimmy DeSana (1949–1990, US) und Paul P. (1977, CA) in den KW, Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin statt. Die Ausstellung bringt die Werke von Jimmy DeSana und Paul P. erstmals in einen Dialog und betrachtet das Genre des Porträts aus der Perspektive der beiden Künstler.
Salvation ist ein bisher unveröffentlichtes Künstlerbuch, das DeSana kurz vor seinem Tod im Jahr 1990 konzipierte. Die Publikation enthält 44 der späten fotografischen Abstraktionen des Künstlers, die auf ruhige und poetische Weise über Verlust, Tod und das Nichts meditieren.
